World of Baroque


I. WORLD OF GUITAR: 500 Years of the Plucked Strings
Saturday, February 10, 2007 at UCSC Music Recital Hall

A history in sound of the world’s most popular instrument. From the earliest lutes and guitars through the noble Baroque lute, from diminutive forms and the stately long-necked theorbo to 19th and 20th century guitars, our program will delight with varied sounds and styles. We will also premiere new ‘Baroque’ music. A meet-the-artist reception follows for subscribers and donors. Co-presented with the UCSC Music Department Recital Series.


II. WORLD OF SPANISH BAROQUE: Kingdoms of Castile
Sunday, March 18, 2007 at UCSC Music Recital Hall
El Mundo, directed by Richard Savino, with Janelle DeStefano (mezzo soprano)

Spectacular and vibrant music heard in Spain, southern Italy, Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia and Peru from the 16th through 18th centuries, exploring the relationship between these cultures in music by Falconieri, Ceruti, Orejón y Aparicio, de Murcia, Castellanos, Quiroz and Duron.

The program features dramatic zarzuelas, romantic tonos humanos and brilliant instrumentals. Concert sponsor: Dean Silvers.

III. NORTHERN WORLDS: Swedish Folk & Baroque
Friday, April 13, 2007 at UCSC Music Recital Hall
Olov Johansson (nyckelharpa), Barry Phillips (violoncello, cello piccolo & drones) Lars Johannesson (wooden flute), Linda Burman-Hall (early keyboards)

Heavenly music based in the rural Swedish traditions, featuring members of the renowned Väsen Ensemble (Vasen.se) , including Olov Johansson, the foremost artist of the Swedish keyed fiddle and artists from Lux Musica. The distinctive sound of these world-renowned musicians ranges from folk to Baroque, with a contemporary flavor. Concert sponsors: Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation and Community Music School.


IV. THE BAROQUE ORGAN WORLD: Anthony Newman, organist
Saturday, April 28, 2007 at Holy Cross Church

The virtuoso who inspired our audience to a standing ovation, returns to the historic pipe organ of Holy Cross Church with a dazzling program of Bach, Mozart, Daquin, Couperin and Newman.

For over 26 years, the multifaceted Anthony Newman has been in the public eye as one of the country's leading organ virtuosos and as a prodigiously active harpsichordist, fortepianist, conductor, composer, writer and recording artist. A prolific composer as well, Mr. Newman has had his works performed worldwide, including London, Paris, Budapest and Vienna, and in Germany. Born in Los Angeles, Mr. Newman studied in Paris with Alfred Cortot, Nadia Boulanger and the famed organist Pierre Cochereau. He received a Diplome Superieur from the Ecole Normale de Musique with a special commendation from Cortot. In the United States, he trained with pianist Edith Oppens and composers Leon Kirchner and Luciano Berio, and served as choral assistant to New York Pro Musica Director Noah Greenberg. Mr. Newman's own teaching career has included positions at the Juilliard School and Indiana University, and he currently heads the graduate music program at Purchase College of the State University of New York.




V. WIND WORLD: The Four Winds

Join us for a very special Mother’s Day celebration of music from chapel, court and countryside, as blown across Baroque Europe by virtuosi of each of the four families of wind instruments. A meet-the-artist reception follows for subscribers and donors. Lux Musica was formed in 1994 and is an ensemble of virtuosi dedicated to presenting the most beautiful works from the Enlightenment, drawing on the versatile combination of historical flutes, violin or viola, violoncello or viola da gamba and keyboards. The ensemble features Lars Johannesson on 18th-19th century flutes, Linda Burman-Hall on harpsichord and fortepiano, and Amy Brodo on violoncello and viola da gamba.
